Reading regularly is essential for children to be successful in learning.
Children in Sycamore will receive a guided reading lesson each week where they will learn or develop an existing skill that they will be given the opportunity to master independently.
The children are also given time to read independently in class.
We expect all children, where possible, to read for at least 15 minutes per day outside of school. This can be independent, but reading to or with an adult regularly is strongly encouraged even in Key Stage Two.
Parents / Guardians are asked to sign their child's home learning diary on each day that they have read outside of school, also indicating whether this was independent or not. Home reading will be closely monitored and children that read every day outside of school will be celebrated and awarded a house point each week.
Included within your child's home learning pack is a 'Reading Challenge Card'. Pupils are expected to complete at least one of these tasks for each book that they read. Some time will be given in school to complete tasks, but children are also encouraged to complete these tasks in their own time. Children will be awarded a house point for each reading challenge task that they complete to a good standard. These can be completed and handed in at any time.
